Logbook, kept by W. S. Varnum, comprised of three whaling voyages. First voyages documents the Alexander (Steam bark) of San Francisco, mastered by Benjamin T. Tilton, from 3 April 1901 - 4 November 1901 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans. Includes descriptions of whales, seals, bears, and walruses seen or taken, accidents, desertions, cruelty onboard, a death at sea, interactions with indigenous peoples, punishments, and seeing shipwrecks. Also contains whale stamps, ship stamps, whale sketches, accounts, skins stored, and provisions lists. There were several reports of mumps and measles among the crew, including the captain who caught the measles. Other places represented include East Cape (Buldir Island, Alaska) Whaling grounsds include the Arctic Ocean grounds. Second voyage documents the Alexander (Steam bark) of San Francisco, mastered by Benjamin T. Tilton, from 3 April 1902 - 1 November 1902 to the Pacific and Arctic Oceans in addition to the Chukchi Sea. Includes descriptions of whales, seals, bears, and walruses seen or taken, accidents, desertions, cruelty onboard, a death at sea, interactions with indigenous peoples, punishments, and seeing shipwrecks.
